For over 3 decades, doctors harvested eggs and obtained sperm from the woman’s partner to be used for in vitro fertilization, and then stored the embryos for future implantation for the purpose of extended fertility preservation. This is a wonderful option for couples in long-term relationship; however this could pose a significant dilemma for a younger woman who may not have a partner. This dated procedure is not an ethical option for others. The successful slow-freezing and thawing of unfertilized eggs (oocytes) is now available. Additionally, FEB offers security and peace of mind for women and couples prior to undergoing chemotherapy or radiation as those treatments often cause permanent destruction of the reproductive function. Freezing one’s own unfertilized eggs also extends reproductive options for those who want to achieve pregnancy, but cannot or choose not to at a given time.
