West Coast Fertility Centers is Hosting the World’s First Reunion of Nearly 70 Babies Born from Egg Freezing on October 15th, 2011

The entire staff at West Coast Fertility Centers has been diligently planning the first ever reunion of babies born from frozen eggs. Unlike other regular IVF reunions periodically held by various fertility centers, we are hosting the world’s first reunion of actual babies born from frozen eggs. We're all so happy and excited to see all the beautiful frozen egg babies.

“This baby reunion is unique because it celebrates the pioneering families and their babies conceived from thawed frozen eggs.  Although some groups may consider egg freezing “investigational,” nearly 70 joyous families and their frozen egg babies will come together to celebrate LIFE at West Coast Fertility Centers,” states Dr. Diaz.

Guest speakers at this world’s first frozen egg reunion event will include…

Alice Crisci, Founder and CEO of Fertile Action Network
Jack Jacoub, MD, Director of Oncology at OC Memorial Hospital
Barbara, Mother of first frozen egg baby – Cadyn who turned 6 years old on Oct 6.

“David Diaz, MD, Medical Director of Frozen Egg Bank Inc. and West Coast Fertility Centers has always been on the scientific forefront of finding real solutions for real human needs because he understands that unanticipated life events can threaten a woman’s reproduction. Cancer at a young age, career demands, single marital status, or a depleted ovarian function can all endanger a woman's fertility potential.

Since 2000, Frozen Egg Bank’s (FEB) medical and scientific team have been refining the art of freezing and thawing a woman’s unfertilized egg for fertilization and implantation at a later date. Long before the “flash freeze” method was in vogue, FEB in association with West Coast Fertility Center, presented their 91% frozen egg survival rate data at the ASRM Meeting in 2008. The team developed an IRB approved study for their digital programmed freezing method that has resulted in the births of nearly 70 healthy babies out of about 400 born in the U.S. from frozen eggs. Cadyn, the Center’s oldest frozen egg baby and the first in California, will celebrate her sixth birthday on October 6, 2011.”

First Frozen Egg Baby Turns 6 Years Old Today

Happy 6th Birthday to adorable Cadyn Elizabeth, our first frozen egg baby born at West Coast Fertility Centers.

Cadyn is a very special little girl. Although she turned 6 today, the eggs from which she was conceived were frozen in 2001 at the egg freezing program at West Coast Fertility Centers, the leading Center in the country specializing in the field of fertility preservation. The Center pioneered a freezing method called the Landa Freezing Technology capable of storing embryos and eggs for young patients with cancer and women who wish to extend their fertile years until they are ready to start a family.

These pictures were taken last year during her 5th birthday when we threw a surprise party for Cadyn at West Coast Fertility Centers. A bright and outgoing redhead, Cadyn was presented with a beautiful cake, a princess tiara and a gift certificate to her favorite store. Birthday wishes and lots of hugs were exchanged until mother and daughter wee off to continue the celebration at Disneyland.

Cadyn even posed with an ultrasound picture of herself when she was just 10 weeks into her mom’s pregnancy. Wittingly, Cadyn also suggested that we take a picture of her holding up a plastic egg representing that she was a frozen egg baby.

We won’t get to see Cadyn this year on her actual birthday, but we will see her next week as she will be part of a big reunion celebration. Dr. David Diaz and staff will be hosting the WORLD’S FIRST REUNION OF BABIES BORN FROM FROZEN EGGS on Saturday, October 15, 2011 to celebrate the pioneering families and their babies conceived from thawed frozen eggs. Nearly 70 joyous families and their frozen egg babies will come together to CELEBRATE LIFE at West Coast Fertility Centers in Orange County.

First Frozen Egg Pregnancy Achieved in Chattanooga Using the Landa Freezing Method

Congratulations to the The Fertility Center of Chattanooga for achieving the very first pregnancy in the area from frozen eggs using the proprietary Landa Freezing Method developed at Frozen Egg Bank.

As featured on our blog story in April 2010, we announced The Fertility Center of Chattanooga as our Frozen Egg Bank affiliate in Tennessee. Susan Walker, Senior Embryologist at Chattanooga came to train with our team of scientists. During her visit, Susan learned the art of using the Landa Freezing Technology which has yielded very promising results in the preservation and thawing of human eggs.

The Landa Freezing Technology was developed and perfected by David Diaz, MD, FACOG and Antoine La, TS, ELD, EMB to improve the birth rates following egg freezing. Since 2005, we have celebrated the birth of 64 healthy babies from frozen eggs, more than any other program in the United States.

"The physicians and embryologist at the Fertility Center partnered with leading experts in oocyte cryopreservation who fine-tuned the freezing process. Now the Fertility Center has confirmation in its own Chattanooga lab for freezing eggs before fertilizing with sperm. As needed, the eggs are thawed and fertilized to create embryos that are then transferred to the uterus for a pregnancy attempt. With this method, fewer extra embryos are created or need to be stored. More and more patients are favoring this option that avoids some of the ethical dilemmas surrounding frozen embryos." -excerpt from TheChattanoogan.com. Read the full story here

"Being a 34 year old female, I have thought about egg freezing for 2 years. I did not want my biological clock to dictate when I should get married and have children. After reading about Dr. Diaz and all the great work he has done, I decided to proceed.

The staff at West Coast Fertility Center has been fantastic!! It is a sigh of relief knowing my little eggs are now safe in a freezer until it’s time I decide to have children. I cannot say “thank you” enough to West Coast Fertility Center for their professionalism and care to their patients."  –Yvonne L.

“Helping Women Touched by Cancer Become Mothers”

West Coast Fertility Centers has partnered up with Fertile Action because we both share the same goal to educate and assist women newly diagnosed with cancer understand and take action to preserve their fertility through egg freezing before undergoing cancer treatments that can cause infertility.

Many wonderful plans are in the works and we’ll soon be announcing the benefits of our association with Fertile Action. Below is an excerpt written by Alice Crisci, the founder of www.FertileAction.org.

“I know all too well how overwhelming a cancer diagnosis feels. It happened to me when I was 31-years-old. I wanted to be a mom more than anything else in the world and was devastated to learn my life-saving cancer treatment could make me infertile.

It took less than two weeks for me to prepare my ovaries for egg retrieval and it was the best two weeks of my entire cancer journey. I felt like the medical procedures relating to cancer were being done to me, but preserving my fertility was the one, positive thing I was choosing for me.

I loved every step of my fertility preservation journey (except for the the American Express bill). My totsicles (frozen embryos) are truly what got me through treatment. Every time I wanted to give up, I thought about the children waiting to be born to me, their Mama.

I launched Fertile Action to ensure other women could preserve their fertility prior to cancer treatment. Three years later, I launched Fertile Action Network (FAN) to eliminate cost as the barrier to male and female cancer survivors becoming parents through IVF, adoption, surrogacy or egg, embryo and sperm donation. We won’t stop until all cancer survivors who want to become parents actualize their dream.”

With vision and gratitude,
Alice Crisci

Egg Freezing and Thawing Should Be Left to Experienced Experts
Who Practice It Often and Practice It Well

Human eggs are fragile whether they are freshly harvested or frozen and thawed. They are large, water filled cells that require a meticulous preparation before freezing and subsequent thawing.

Unfortunately for the consumer, the vast majority of clinics offering “egg freezing” have never even attempted to thaw a single one of their patients’ eggs. This is a glaring example of why egg freezing is still considered “experimental.” In the hands of experienced practitioners who practice the art of egg freezing, the success rate in the favorable patient age group approximates those of a fresh IVF cycle.

When Considering Egg Freezing, You Must Ask the Following Key Questions:

1. What is the Survival Rate when frozen eggs are thawed?

(91% at West Coast Fertility)

2. How many Live Births have been reported at the center?

(62 at West Coast Fertility & 8 On-going Pregnancies as of May 2011)

3. How many Eggs are Thawed per Attempt to produce a pregnancy?

(6 at West Coast Fertility Centers)

4. What is the Cost of the Egg Freezing Procedure?

Since it is accepted that the definition of fertility treatments is the birth of a healthy baby, we are curious to know the live birth rates after egg thawing from the other fertility clinics who offer egg freezing. We are very proud to report that  Egg Freezing at West Coast Fertility Centers have resulted in the Birth of 62 Healthy Babies with many on-going pregnancies from frozen eggs as of May 2011. Like many other areas of medicine, egg freezing and thawing should be left to experienced experts who practice it often and practice it well. Egg Freezing Specialist, Dr. David and his Team are among the world's foremost authorities in the Science of Egg Freezing.

Are You a Candidate for Egg Freezing?

~ Women wishing to delay child bearing for career or personal reasons.

~ Women diagnosed with cancer who wish to store their eggs before cancer treatments.

~ Couples who prefer egg freezing versus embryo freezing for religious and/or ethical reasons.

~ Women whose best option for pregnancy is with young, frozen donor eggs.

~ Women wishing to donate eggs for our Egg Bank Program. Donor compensation is available.

Help extend your fertility by acting now to freeze your eggs while they’re still healthy!

Make no mistake that a woman’s fertility declines steadily after reaching peak levels between ages 18 and 25. After the age of 35, the average woman’s fertility drops by about one half! By age 40 the average fertility rate is 15% of that of a woman at age 25.

This decline in pregnancy continues until it reaches very low levels of 1% or less per month at age 44 and beyond. For these reasons, egg freezing is best performed for women 38 years or younger.

An Egg Donor Shares Her Story

“After graduating from college, I was restless and unsure of what my next step should be. Family and friends told me how proud they were of me for finishing school, but I thought, what’s the big deal? It led to me think about my life and things I accomplished thus far. I compiled a mental list of things that I could say I was truly proud of, and came up very short-handed.

With school out of the way, I knew I needed to find a job. I scoured Craigslist and found very few jobs that excited and/or inspired me. It was there I stumbled upon a listing for egg donors. I had heard of the process before, but had never looked into it or thought of participating. But with absolutely nothing on my plate, I thought, hey, this could be a cool adventure. I have no obligations holding me back, and I DO have bills to pay. I bet no one will want my eggs anyway!

But what started on a whim ended up being one of the best things I’ve ever done. Yes, there are needles and a minor surgery involved, but the temporary pain is far outweighed by the gratitude and care expressed by the receiving couple and the West Coast Fertility staff. Imagine that a month or so of your time may result in a LIFETIME of love for a dedicated couple that desperately wants something everyone should have the choice to experience—to be a parent.

It’s definitely not an easy process, but when you are being led the whole way by the truly wonderful staff at West Coast Fertility, you have very little to be afraid of.  You’re not just another appointment or number here; you can feel that they want to develop a relationship with you, and they always have your best interest in mind. I feel so blessed that I was matched with this particular clinic. There’s not enough good I can say about the people I got to work with and the experience I went through. It would have never been the same, never been as good if I ended up somewhere else. I now have something I can be truly proud of for the rest of my life, and hopefully a couple out there will have a baby to love for the rest of theirs.”   ~Donor JM1695

What is Egg Donation?

Many couples who want to have children find it difficult or impossible to conceive because of certain medical conditions such as advanced maternal age. In such cases, egg donation has enabled women whose ovaries do not produce enough healthy eggs, to become pregnant using healthy eggs from an egg donor.

Becoming an Egg Donor

If you apply to become an egg donor, you will be providing the gift of life to women who desperately wish to have their own children. Donor candidates must schedule several office visits with us before they may be accepted to our program. These visits will include a complete

  • Physical and gynecological exam
  • Medical and family history
  • Blood and urine tests
  • Psychological evaluation

You will also be informed by a program coordinator about your rights and responsibilities before being considered for egg donation. You must read a detailed informed consent and verbalize your understanding of the egg donation process. You will also be compensated for your time and commitment.
